Note: Irish records for the period including and prior to the early 19th Century are sparse in many areas due to poor record keeping and/or destruction of records. Although this may be overcome in some instances by using other relevant record sets, there is the possibility that record losses/gaps may be too extensive in some areas during earlier time periods. Other resources such as the Ancestry.com Autosomal DNA test and the Family Tree Y-DNA test may be able to assist research in these instances

Note: DNA testing websites present ethnicities in varying ways, meaning you may see "Irish" on some sites and not on others when you review your DNA results. Ancestry.com has the largest DNA database of international users, and we recommend that anyone wishing to explore their Irish genetic history should consider taking a test with this company in order to maximise the opportunity for matching with other users who have DNA in common.

Please note: We cannot advise you on your application. Our role is in assisting you in obtaining the necessary certificates to apply for Irish citizenship. Any specific queries relating to your application should be referred to the DFA.

Individuals born outside of Ireland may be able to obtain Irish Citizenship if they have an Irish grandparent who is/was an Irish citizen. If you are eligible, you may become an Irish citizen via foreign birth registration. Further guidance on this process is available from the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Applications for Irish citizenship may also be made on the basis of descent from ancestors further back than grandparents or on the basis of other Irish associations. However, such applications are considered entirely at the discretion of the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform. The ministerial discretion is exercised rarely, and only in highly exceptional circumstances. Further information on such applications is available from the Department of Justice

Note: Many records were lost in the Public Record Office [Dublin] fire which took place during the Civil War in 1922. Although some copies of records from this repository survive, this collection is very small and may not include specific records that you have seen referenced as being held by the original PRO. Records in respect of the counties of Ulster i.e. Antrim, Armagh, Cavan, Derry/Londonderry, Donegal, Down, Fermanagh, Monaghan and Tyrone, may be retained in the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) in Belfast.

If you would like to commission a more in-depth research project, fill out the form above and our team will contact you with a research plan and costs. Please note all research projects have a turnaround time of 12 weeks.

The name of your target ancestor(s) and their rough date and place of birth. Parents, siblings and children of this ancestor and any address they lived at in Ireland or elsewhere is also very helpful. Dates of marriages and deaths can be very useful, as can occupations.

We also ask that you give us the names of your grandparents on the target line (if known) as
this helps us orient ourselves in your family tree.

Absolutely. Our research team will put together a plan for you based on the information provided in your form, and will let you know the scale and cost for a project covering more than one family line.

This varies based on your knowledge of your family history and the surviving records.

Our experts can trace almost all families in Ireland back to the 1830s. Before 1830 we assess case-by-case what research is possible as record survival varies widely across the island of Ireland.

The cost of your research project will depend on several factors, such as your objectives, how many family lines/ancestors we are researching, the complexity of your research goal etc. Once you have filled out our form, a team member will be in touch with a research plan and quote for you.

All research projects have a 12-week turnaround time.

Research can be completed in a shorter time frame, but this will be charged at a premium.

The output of our research will be a written digital report detailing our findings, including all
relevant documents, maps and images along with suggestions for further research.

discussed once your contact with our team has begun.
